How to read a magnesium label

The front may say “magnesium glycinate.” The useful numbers live in the Supplement Facts panel.

Find the serving first

The Primal Sprout draft lists three capsules as one serving. Its 275 mg magnesium amount applies to all three capsules together, not each capsule.

Distinguish the compound from elemental magnesium

The panel says 275 mg magnesium from 2,500 mg magnesium glycinate. The 2,500 mg describes the source compound; the 275 mg is the amount used for the Daily Value and total supplemental intake.

Remember the supplemental upper limit

NIH lists 350 mg/day as the adult upper limit for magnesium from supplements and medications. Magnesium naturally present in food is not counted in that limit. A limit is not a personalized target.

Medication and kidney cautions

Magnesium can reduce absorption of some oral bisphosphonates and antibiotics. Some diuretics and long-term acid-reducing medicines can affect magnesium status. Impaired kidney function changes the body's ability to clear excess magnesium. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about timing and fit.

Do not turn form into an outcome guarantee

“Glycinate” identifies the source form. It does not justify a guaranteed sleep, calm, cramp, migraine, or disease outcome.
